The skirt has a weighted head to get down deeper into the water where the fish are waiting for a meal. They measure about 12″ in length and come with a Mustad heavy-duty saltwater-grade 7/0 stainless steel hook and two swivels. There is a swivel at the head and a second swivel at the hook all connected with a heavy-weight steel line. The swivels keep your line from twisting and help keep the ferocious fighting bluefish on the line. Available in four different colors: Pink, Red Hot, Orange/Yellow, and Gold Glitter. Then we use an 80 lb. braided line on the reels. That seems excessive but when the bluefish are hitting these Hoochies, they’re doing it with a lot of force. Make sure that your drag is set accordingly and tighten it down slightly once you’re hooked up.Troll these rigs anywhere from 3-10 knots. The slower you go and the more line you let out, the lower the rig will sink. We usually put the rig out between 100 to 150′ and run at an average of 7 knots. You can cover a lot of ground at this speed. Once you find fish just keep circling back over them.A second way is to use a chaser or a diving sinking lure like a St. Pete Deep Diver Lure in addition to the Hoochie rigs. Using a second leader, also 80 lb. mono, attach the Rapala with a heavy-duty snap swivel to the swivel at the head of the Hoochie. It will follow the Hoochie and appear to be chasing it down. This method created multiple double hook-ups during the summer months on St. Pete Sport Fishing.Where to useYou can use these pre-rigged Hoochie Octopus Squid Rigs almost anywhere that you find Striped Bass and/or Bluefish. They work great in the rips or out on the flats. They have been tried and tested all over Cape Cod including Cape Cod Bay, the south side, and Buzzard’s Bay. They should also work great off of the Jersey Shore and out in New York. Basically anywhere that you find migrating squid.
