Sir James Stewart was a lawyer and political opponent of the Stuarts. He was exiled for some time, before receiving a pardon from James II of Great Britain in 1687. Following the Glorious Revolution he was appointed Lord Advocate. This work regards the repeal of the Penal Laws and Test Acts during the Glorious Revolution. William of Orange wished to repeal the Penal Laws but opposed the repeal of the Test Acts. James II had wished to repeal both which would have allowed Catholics to hold public office. Gaspar Fagel was responsible for authoring correspondence from and on behalf of William III during the English Revolution of 1688. This work is Sir James Stewart's reaction to one of Gasper Fagel's letters. William used Fagel and his letters to reassure English Nonconformists or Dissenters that they would be allowed to practice religion. The 'Letter writ by Mijn Heer Fagel' conveyed William's stance. There were many replies, and defences published in response. Sir James Stewart supported the repeal of the Test Acts, which opposed Fagel's letter. It is here that Stewart has written a response. Collated, complete, with a caption title instead of a normal title page. ESTC No. R5013 Dated from the colophon to the rear leaf.
