Foster uses examples of Aeolic, Greek, Latin and English syntax and metre to support his thesis. To this work Foster defends the accentuation of Greek against the theories of the Dutch classical scholar Vossius and English scholar Henry Gally. More specifically, Foster is responding to Gally's work 'A Dissertation against pronouncing the Greek Language according to accents'. Gally later issued a response to Foster's rebuttal titled 'A Second Dissertation against pronouncing the Greek Language according to accents, in answer to Mr [John] Foster's Essay'. This second edition of Foster's work issued the same year as Gally's response, includes a further response to Gally's 'Second Dissertation'. ESTC N9384 Foster also analyses the Greek Elegiac poem of M Musurus with a Latin version and notes. Prior owner''s inscription to the endpapers from the Quarterly Review no.53.
