WASHINGTON, January 2, 1845. hong DEPARTMENT OF STATE, Washington, December 31, 1844008 The Secretary of State, to whom has been referred the resolution of the Senate of the 19th instant, requesting the President " to inform the Senate whether the Executive department is informed of the various treaty stip- ulations now subsisting between the Republic of Texas and other inde- pendent Powers; and that he be requested to communicate such stipulations, if in the possession of the department, to the Senate"-has the honor to transmit herewith copies of two treaties, the one of commerce and naviga- tion between the Republic of Texas and Great Britian, concluded at London on the 13th of November, 1840; the other of amity, navigation, and com- merce, between the said Republic and France, concluded at Paris on the 25th of September, 1839, which embrace all the information on the files of this department in relation to the subjects mentioned in the said res- olution. To the Senate of the United States: I transmit, herewith, a letter from the Secretary of State, accompanied by the copy of a letter from Mr. Raymond, secretary of legation and chargé d'affaires ad interim of the Republic of Texas, in answer to the Senate's resolution of the 16th December last. The Secretary of State, to whom was referred the resolution of the Sen- ate of the 16th instant, requesting the President to "inform the Senate whether the Executive department is possessed of any definite information by which the present public debt of the Republic of Texas can be ascer- tained; and, if so, to communicate it to the Senate, with the aggregate amount of that debt; and, also, that he be requested to inform the Senate whether any, and, if any, what additions have been made to that debt since the signing of the treaty with that Republic submitted to the Senate at its last session: "And that he be further requested to inform the Senate what amount of public lands of Texas had been granted by the Spanish, Mexican, and Texan Governments, and to what extent the faith of either of said Gov- ernments had been pledged, by the issuing of scrip or other security, to make grants thereof, or in any form to part with its title to or interest in the same, previous to the signing of said treaty; what amount remained at
