Description: 1880’s cdv of Herman Webster Mudgett. Published in Vermont. Vermont and U of M alum. Dr Mudgett attended med school during the dark days of learning. Grave robbing was a big fear of the US public. One of late great get rich schemes of the time were grave alarms. Colleges and Universities were entering a new realm of learning in the 19th century. Disection of deceased humans was at the forefront of the advancement of medical technology. There were also laws making it difficult for institutions to furnish the proper learning examples. That’s where guys like Mudgett came in. Mudgett practices of supplying institutions with what they were looking for was learned from the culture of the time. There is a question of was the monster already there or created by that culture. At any rate Mudgett took his learned practices to the level of insurance fraud after his graduation. Mudgett opened a hotel in Chicago for the World’s Fair knowing he had an endless supply of insurance policies he could cash in on. That was Mudgett demise. The good doctor collected over a quarter million dollars in life insurance policies in a year before the insurance company decided to hire a private investigator. Wasn’t hard for them to figure out what Mudgett was up to. Mudgett was executed shortly after his arrest. There are several documentaries on Dr H H Holmes aka Herman Webster Mudgett.
