Description: FOR the complete story, FULL DETAILS and BIG CLEAR PICTURES, Please SEE THE DESCRIPTION 1928 FLOWN LETTER & STAMPED Envelope 1ST TRANSATLANTIC FLIGHT on "GRAF ZEPPELIN" Description This is an amazing piece of “Postal History”, “Flight History” and general “World History”. It is a complete letter, envelope and rare “4 Reichsmark Stamp” that actually flew on the very first “Transatlantic” passenger flight in history. It flew on the maiden voyage of the “Graf Zeppelin” in October of 1928. The “Graf Zeppelin” was a passenger-carrying, hydrogen-filled rigid airship that flew from 1928 to 1937. It offered the first commercial transatlantic passenger flight service. Named after the German airship pioneer Ferdinand von Zeppelin, a count or “Graf” in the German nobility, it was conceived and operated by Dr. Hugo Eckener. The “Graf Zeppelin” was operated by a crew of 36, and could carry 24 passengers. It was the longest and largest airship in the world when it was built. More below. Stamp #C-37. Front of the envelope: L. Z. 127 was the number of the “Graf Zeppelin”. • Hughes, Bell & Company of Dallas, Texas were J. Huey Hughes and Frank A. Bell, “Cotton Brokers” located in the “Cotton Exchange Building”, in Dallas. • Four Reichsmark Stamp. • An expensive stamp to buy, 4 Reichsmarks was a lot of money in those days. Back of the envelope: New York Postmark, October 16, 1928. In October of 1928, the “Graf Zeppelin” made its first intercontinental trip, to “Lakehurst Naval Air Station”, in New Jersey, with Eckener in command and Lehmann as first officer. The 6,168-mile crossing was the longest non-stop flight at the time, it had taken 111 hours 44 minutes. The next year, in 1929, the American newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst's media empire paid half the cost of the project to fly the “Graf Zeppelin” around the world. “Graf Zeppelin” set off from Lakehurst, New Jersey on August 8, 1929 heading eastwards. The ship refueled at Friedrichshafen, then continued across Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union to Tokyo. After five days at a former German airship shed that had been removed from Jüterbog and rebuilt at Kasumigaura Naval Air Station in Japan, “Graf Zeppelin” continued across the Pacific to California. The ship landed at Mines Field in Los Angeles, completing the first ever nonstop flight across the Pacific Ocean. The “Graf Zeppelin” arrived back at Lakehurst from the west on the morning of August 29, three weeks after it had departed to the east. Flying time from Lakehurst to Lakehurst was 12 days, 12 hours, and 13 minutes. The entire circumnavigation (including stops) took 21 days, 5 hours, and 31 minutes. It was the fastest circumnavigation of the globe at the time. The Letter: From Carl von Grundherr of Bremen. • It ends: “The flight will leave its mark upon history and if you keep this letter it will perhaps remind you of a great event one of these days”. The Piece: A unique piece of history. It will be sent in a new “oversize” currency holder that protects the entire thing. As grading is subjective, please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
