The 1937 Great Hong Kong Typhoon was an unnamed typhoon in Hong Kong on 2 September 1937. It was one of the deadliest typhoons in Hong Kong history killing 11,000 people. The British cruisers in Hong Kong Harbour were weathering the waves successfully, only to fall victim to those which did not. The 1,668 ton Chinese AN LEE came surging down against them, banging and bouncing along ships sides in the swirls. The AN LEE itself then slammed stern first right upon the Hong Kong waterfront wharf. With land reclamation this location is now probably well inland !! At the time Hong Kong harbour was the seventh busiest port in the world in the 1930s. When the typhoon hit, the harbour was unusually crowded with ships moved on from Shanghai, which had been recently invaded by Japan. Among the ships pictured the Chinese steamer An-Lee . The harbourside's picturesque dwellings were also totally destroyed, along with around 1,800 fishing boats, and the small fishing villages of Sha Tin and Tai Po, which were wiped out by a tidal wave. Around 11,000 people are thought to have been killed.
