Description: 1939 Vintage Wire Photo by ASSOCIATED PRESS Virginia attorney Edward Simpkins prepares for hit-run driving trial of Dr. William Dodd, former Ambassador to Germany, which will open in Hanover County Courthouse in Virginia. While Hanover Police Sheriff Sumpter Priddy looks on, Simpkins interviews Pearl Smith, Ann Grimes and Gertrude Greene, who said they saw accident in which Glois Grimes, 4-years-old, African-American Child was injured. In December 1938, Dodd accidentally ran over a 4-year-old African-American child and fled the scene. The child sustained severe injuries, but survived. Dodd was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, convicted, and fined $250 plus court costs.
