Description: Handsome fold-out 1964 Esso road map of the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, printed more than 53 years ago. The map opens to 24" x 25½" and has great detail on old highway alignments, including U.S. Route 66, with cartography by the General Drafting Company. A text block describes the new Interstate Highway signs that were just starting to appear. The eastern half of the country is on one side; the western is on the other, along with maps of Alaska and Hawaii. The map was distributed by the Humble Oil & Refining Company promote its Esso brand, and it is dated April 1964 in the legend. The code number on the back cover is P264. The letter P in the P264 code is a key to the printer. The numbers 264 are the date: February 1964. Esso often issued different editions of its road maps in given years. Known codes for its 1964 United States map include P264, P664 and P165. This is the P264 map. Condition: It is in very good condition, bright and clean, with no rips, tears, or writing.
