1965 Military VINTAGE Mountain CLIMBING Equip: 4 pitons & snaplink collection

Description: Old US Military Mountaineering items: Here is a collection of US Military Mountaineering Equipment including: four US Military Pitons, 1 snaplinks. These items were the type of mountain climbing equipment used in military mountaineering (1950's -1960's). Included in this listing are: 1 Vertical Piton, 1 Angle Piton, 1 Horizontal Piton and 1 Wafer Piton and one snaplinks. Some of these are marked US and some are dated. The Pitons were mainly used when existing cracks could be located. Once secure to the rock face, a snaplink or carabiner would be placed in the ring opening on the piton or hanger. Climbing rope would then inserted in the snaplink so that the climber could then advance up the cliff. Most mountain climbers today seriously frown on using these devices. Chocks, grabs and friends have mostly replaced these older climbing aids today. Some pitons are covered in a layer of protective cosmoline and if removed would most likely reveal US markings and a date of manufacture.
