Description: “SOME KIND OF POWER” NAVAJO CHILDREN'S SKINWALKER NARRATIVES Written by Margaret K. Brady with a Foreword by Barre Toelken Published by University of Utah Press, Salt Lake City. Copyright 1984; it is the first and likely only printing of this very rare book. This is a non-fiction ethnology and describes Native American witchcraft beliefs, specifically the Yenaldlooshi or “skin walker”., of the Dine, or Navajo people. The stories are recorded from children verbatim. At the time this book was written, Margaret K. Brady was Assistant Professor of #English at the University of Utah. She received her Ph.D. in folklore from the University of Texas at Austin. She was participating in an educational program, “Navajo Story Telling: Perceptions of Culture and Landscape,” at the Montezuma Elementary School in Montezuma Creek, Utah, in which groups of school children were taken to major landforms in southeastern Utah, and were encouraged to recite their traditional stories about the site. From the dust jacket description: ”Eyes wide in eager expectation, a circle of children draws closer together to hear a small, brown-eyed girl whispering the first words of a story which they all suspect will eventually both frighten them and make them laugh in delight. ‘There was this family.’ Angela begins. ‘There was a sister, a brother, a baby, and a mom and dad. They lived in a a hogan…’” So begins Margaret Brady’s introduction to this insightful study of Navajo culture as experienced and expressed by Navajo children in their telling of stories about skinwalker, one of the most powerful figures in the Navajo universe. These stories dramatically present the clearest and strongest argument for the serious study of children’s folklore on its own terms—a study too long neglected by anthropologists and folklorists alike. Much of what these Navajo children’s narratives reveal about symbolism, social interaction, and value systems is in complete accord with beliefs and customs found widely throughout Navajo culture. Even if narrated in a “foreign” language (English in this case), children’s narratives can provide as serious a resource for cultural study as any other emanating from the group.
