He also coauthored a novel, A Nest of Ninnies, with John Ashbery in 1969. Schuyler also received the Longview Foundation Award in 1961, and the Frank O'Hara Prize for Poetry in 1969 for Freely Espousing. Schuyler was a Guggenheim Fellow, a fellow of the American Academy of Poets, and a 1985 recipient of the Whiting Award. He was a central figure in the New York School and is often associated with fellow New York School poets John Ashbery, Frank O'Hara, Kenneth Koch, and Barbara Guest. Lewis Warsh (born1944) is an American poet, visual artist, professor, prose writer, editor, and publisher. In the summer of 1965 he attended The Berkeley Poetry Conference where he met Anne Waldman at Robert Duncan’s reading. The two married and moved to 33 St. Mark’s Place in the Lower East Side of New York. Warsh’s community grew to include Ted Berrigan, Bernadette Mayer, Ron Padgett, Bill Berkson, Joe Brainard and George Schneeman, among many others. He is a principal member of the second generation of the New York School poets, however he has said that “no two people write alike, even if they’re associated with a so-called ‘school’ .” Joe Brainard (1942 -1994) was an American artist and writer associated with the New York School. His prodigious and innovative body of work included assemblages, collages, drawing, and painting, as well as designs for book and album covers, theatrical sets and costumes. In particular, Brainard broke new ground in using comics as a poetic medium in his collaborations with other New York School poets. He is best known for his memoir I Remember, of which Paul Auster said: “It is . . . one of the few totally original books I have ever read.” Darragh Park (1939 - 2009) was an American Artist and the literary executor of the estate of Pulitzer Prize–winning poet James Schuyler. Hope Sandrow (born 1951) is an American multi-disciplinary artist. She founded the Artist and Homeless Collaborative project in the mid 1980s. Through it, artists such as Kiki Smith, Robert Kushner, the Guerilla Girls and Ida Applebroog worked on creative projects with women in local homeless shelters. Sandrow exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1984. Her work is included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Cavemodern was founded in 2005 as a home for important "modern" books and works on paper. "Cave" meant a home for both the tangible touch of beautiful objects and a cozy virtual den for armchair exploration. "Modern" starts with the art and literature that went beyond realistic depictions to expressive use of color, non-traditional materials, and new techniques and mediums. Our focus has evolved to be on important pieces by cultural innovators that take their work in new, unexpected, and modern directions.
