Description: 2 praying mantis oothecae (egg cases) with hatching sacks. Each case will be shipped in a smaller individual tea bag. The 3 you will get will be in great condition and you may even get an extra that was either small or was damaged before noticing them while doing yard work. They will be packed in a cardboard box with newspaper to prevent them from being smashed or damaged which will then be put in a poly mailer to prevent water damage. If you would like more I have at least 40 that were saved from the chipper or compost piles The "hatching sacks" when expended are approximately 3.5 x 3.5 x 8.5 inches with opened bottoms. When I used some for my kids to observe a few egg cases hatching I just folded the top over and stapled or safety pinned shut. Orientation of ootheca does not seem to be important as no matter how they were positioned they all seem to hatch just fine. If you chose not to use the sacks for hatching they are actually intended to be used as biodegradable seedling grow bags so please feel free to use them as they were intended. I just saw how well they worked for hatching praying mantis and had more so I figured I would include them for the buyers convenience These ootheca were harvested from my personal yard while doing yard work between September - November 2024. I know all would have been laid this year because they were found on sticks, grass, and weeds that are from this summer-fall. Although I have tried to differentiate species by egg cases description I was unable too on 95% of them. What I can tell you is that from the many many I see around in the spring-fall is that about 1/3 live mantids I see are smaller and brown which I have been told are the Carolina mantis (Stagmomantis carolina) and the Arizona Mantis, while the rest are green in color. I try to leave all that I find undisturbed but we have literally hundreds of oothecae on my property and these ones were on things destined for the wood chipper &/or compost pile
