Description: 20 Fresh Seeds, Texas Mountain Laurel, (Sophora secundiflora) / Mescal beans !. Native to Mexico north to central Texas and established in the arid areas of the American southwest and California, secundiflora is an evergreen ornamental prized for its' glossy, thick, dark-green shiny leaves along with its' cascading clusters of springtime purple-blue fragrant flowers. It does well in full sun in well drained limestone soil with little rain and watering. It also does well as a large container plant.Fall brings furry seed-pods that ripen to release bright red seeds. Often used in jewelry, note that the seeds are toxic if consumed.Like trees native to arid, rocky soils, Texas Mountain Laurel is slow growing but makes for an ideal landscape plant that typically attains a height of 15 to 25 feet. Although the seeds need to be scarified for germination, they are easy to sprout and grow. This is a perfect plant for the water conscious areas of the country. YouTube has many germination suggestions. Scarify seeds by " nicking " with nail clippers, file, or sandpaper. Rubbing briskly on concrete also works. The idea is to " thin" the outer shell, NOT rub a hole through it. After scarifying, soak seed in water 24 to 48 hours prior to planting.
