Description: This rare antique Japanese Woodblock triptych (ink and color on paper) made by the artist Utagawa Hirosada [1819-1865] in 1852 (EDO Period) is of several Kabuki Actors from the play “Akegarasu Yume no Awayuki.” Theatre: Chikugo. PLEASE NOTE: Utagawa Hirosada work is part of prominent collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. MFA Boston has this exact print as part of their collection. These woodblock prints have both the Artists Signature and the Publishers Mark. Not all versions of this work have both. From right to left, this artwork shows the following Actors: (R) Arashi Sanko as Yamanaya Bunzo and Arashi Chidori as Midori.(C) Sawamura Kito II as Urazatto.(L) Nakayama Bun Shichi IV as Tokijiro. This piece is in two museum collections 1) MFA Boston, and Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Utagawa Hirosada’s wood block prints are also part of Asian Art Museum collections at: Harvard Art Museum, Yale University Art Gallery, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Tokyo Museum Collection, Victoria & Albert Museum, and The British Museum.
