Antique Bronze & Marble Grand Tour PLACE VENDOME COLUMN Napoleon

Description: Description: A good Grand Tour model of the Place Vendome column in Paris, cast in bronze and mounted on a polished black slate base. The original was erected by Napoleon Bonaparte to commemorate his victory at the battle of Austerlitz. It was completed in 1810 and was originally topped with a statue of Napoleon dressed as a Roman emperor, holding a statue of Vitory. This was removed during the Bourbon Restoration; it was replaced with a statue of Napoleon as the "Little Corporal" (seen this this model) by Louis-Phillipe and then replaced again, with a statue of Napoleon in a toga, by Louis-Napoleon. The entire column was removed by the Commune in 1871 at the behest of Gustav Courbet and re-erected in 1875. This model dates to the fairly narrow window in the middle of the nineteenth century, when the statue of Napoleon in bicorn hat and English-style riding coat was atop the column. These models of the Vendome column were made in various sizes and in various levels of quality. This example is particularly well-detailed, even for the relatively small size. Size: 11" tall, base is 4.125" square. Mark: None. Condition: Lacking the bronze picket fence which originally surrounded the slate base; some chips and roughness along edges of base, including two chips to one corner (see pics). Otherwise fine.
