This superb Scottish luckenbooth brooch is made of solid 9 carat gold, and is set with stunning hand cut, shaped and polished natural almandine garnet paving. Unusually, not only is every single stone original to the piece, each one is in perfect condition. The result is that the pave is allowed its full effect of a river of gentle, natural yet affecting and beautiful colouration. It contrasts wonderfully with the hint of gold visible at the edges of the stones, along with my very favourite aspect of this piece, which is the delicate, understated hand carved scrollwork to the top and bottom. Its lovely quality gold body is deep and strongly rounded to the back, giving an impression of quality, and the hand pinched castellations between every stone right at the edge is a gorgeous touch of detail that lifts the whole piece. It has later added gold pendant bale and diagonal brooch fittings, and dates to around 1770. It weighs in at 2.5 grams, and is a lovely small, wearable size at 26 x 22 mm.
