Description: Antique Victorian 1896 Walking Suit, Day Dress With Leg Of Mutton Sleeves, Gibson Girl Fashion, Museum Deaccession A striking Antique 1896 Victorian 2 piece in construction, afternoon reception gown walking suit is accented with large leg of mutton sleeves. The fabric is rich dark navy blue satin with absolutely fabulous carnival glass beading decorating the bodice, on stand up collar, extending from waist line upward following contour of large velvet shoulder lapel over the shoulders and around the back...just gorgeous. Wonderful large puffed leg of mutton sleeves as seen in the Gibson Girl era. Recently de-accessioned from the Northampton Historical Society Museum collection in Massachusetts. The gown still retains it's original Museum ID catalog identification tag, inside as well as string tags. The gown is hand stitched and machine sewn. Bodice is small and velvet "V" front with many hook and eye closures. The bodice has 12 metal stays. The bodice closes in front with hook and eye closures. APPROXIMATE MEASUREMENTS BODICE: Bust line 29", Shoulders across back 9-1/2", Bodice waistline 22-1/2", Curved sleeve length 25", Shoulder to front hem 18-1/2". SKIRT: Waistline is 24", Waist to hemline is 39-1/2" in front of the skirt. CONDITIONThe skirt is in very good condition with no damage, except wear in an area at hem line. No underarm discoloration on the outside or inside lining. Bodice lining is in very good condition with no shredding. One metal stay has come out of its sleeve, an easy fix. Beading around stand up collar needs attention, missing beads and loose string of beads need to be attached. Colors are not true, this is a dark blue/green with black velvet front inserts. The skirt closes by hooks and eyes at the back and gathers with pleats in the back for a nice fall. Minor imperfection, skirt has no damage, but some minor wear at hem line and small amount of fabric loss. The inner lining of skirt is a black polished cotton with dark blue velvet at base hem. Skirt is in very good condition. Our antique textiles are collectible and are not new and not reproductions, and have lived a long and eventful life and sometimes developing flaws.
