Description: These two beautiful cups with handles were made in France in the mid-19th century, and are in the old Paris , or “Vieux Paris” style which features undulating porcelain forms that are usually purely decorative, but sometimes functional as well. This pair is of the functional type of Vieux Paris. Another pair featuring portraits, these cups, or coffee cans as they are sometimes called, measure 3” tall c 3” in diameter. They are unmarked. With a brilliant turquoise background, similar to a pair of Old Paris, Sevres style portrait vases I have listed in another listing, the cups feature a Roman or Greek male and female in polychrome profile on a circle of turquoise. The female wears a gilded crown and fancy ribbons in her wavy brown hair. Her ears are exposed and she wears gilt dangle earrings. Her skin is milky white. The other cup features a Roman or Greek warrior with longish wavy brown hair that spills from his headdress with gilt highlights on his brush-style helmet. The helmet also depicts a half bird with wings and a horse body. These strong profiles are Classicalin design. There is the faintest short line approx. 3/4” that is only surface deep and is difficult to discern, on the inside of the cup with the female portrait. I tried to capture it in a photo but it is hard to see. Check out my last photo in this listing. The applied gilt has some wear here and there, but there is no wear to the portrait faces. If you have any questions at all, please message me. I am always happy to help!
