It is as follows: What you have here is the Space Saver phone. These were commonly found in commercial establishments with lots of counters. They were usually mounted to counters. These need to be connected to a subset in order to work properly. That external ringer would be in another room so you could hear that you had a call. This is the second generation Space Saver that came out in 1938 and lasted well into the 70s, so this is most likely 40s or later.
