Description: Emperor Augustus Denarius, Colonia Caesaraugusta, Spain, 19-18 BC. Obverse: CAESAR AVGVSTVS Head of Augustus to right, wearing oak wreath. Reverse:DIVVS IVLIVS in two lines above and below an eight-rayed comet with flaming tail above. Very scarce reverse legend arrangement. This coin commemorates the comet that appeared over Rome in the summer of 44 BC. It was taken to indicate the deification of the recently assassinated Julius Caesar. Augustus used the comet to emphasize his familial connection to Julius Caesar. The comet was thought to be the manifestation of Caesar's divine soul and to herald a new age of peace and prosperity. Octavian declared the comet to be the soul of Caesar being carried up to heaven, which inspired a campaign to deify Caesar. The Roman Senate declared Caesar a god after a year and a half. Purchased from Harlan J. Berk, Ltd., Chicago. Ex Curtis L. Clay collection. BN Paris 1305. RIC 38a. VF/aEF This coin is also a beautiful piece of art that would make a great gift for historians and astronomers.
