Description: I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut song below.) ........ This is a rare June 11th, 1951 "Playgoer" playbill from the one-week, Pre-Broadway engagement of the JULE STYNE, BETTY COMDEN and ADOLPH GREEN musical comedy "TWO ON THE AISLE" at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut. (The production would open July 19th, 1951 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York City and run for 279 performances.) ..... The musical starred BERT LAHR and DOLORES GRAY and featured COLETTE MARCHAND, KAYE BALLARD (replaced in New Haven by KATHRYN MYLORIE), ELLIOTT REID, STANLEY PRAGER, ARTHUR RUBIN, J. C. McCORD, BOB EMMETT, DOROTHY ETHERIDGE, LEILA MARTIN and PATRICIA TOBIN ..... CREDITS: Music by JULE STYNE ("Gypsy", "Bells Are Ringing", "Darling of the Day", "Do Re Mi", "Fade Out, Fade In", "Funny Girl", "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes", "Hallelujah, Baby!", "Hazel Flagg", "High Button Shoes", "Lorelei", "Say, Darling", "Subways Are For Sleeping", "Sugar", "Prettybelle" and "Two on the Aisle"); Book and Lyrics by BETTY COMDEN and ADOLPH GREEN ("On the Town", "Two On the Aisle", "Wonderful Town", "Bells Are Ringing", "Do Re Mi", "Subways Are For Sleeping", "Fade Out - Fade In", "Hallelujah, Baby!", "Lorelei", "Applause", "On the Twentieth Century", "A Doll's Life", "The Will Rogers Follies"); Sets designed by HOWARD BAY; Costumes designed by JOAN PERSONETTE; Choreographed by VALERIE BETTIS (replaced out-of-town by TED CAPPY); Directed by ABE BURROWS; Produced by ARTHUR LESSER ..... DETAILS: The 36 page playbill measures 6" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and bios of each of the leading actors, but no cast photos ..... CUT SONG: The list of musical numbers includes "So Far, So Good" (third scanned image) which was cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of seam splits at both the top and bottom, a light vertical crease and a minor surface abrasion in the lower right corner of the cover, this rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
