Description: Up for sale is a pre-bonsai American elm (Ulmus Americana). It has dropped its leaves for the winter and has gone dormant. The tree is 12 inches tall with a trunk that is a little over 1/2 inch thick. It is 3 years old and growing in a 4 inch nursery pot. It grew in the ground for 2 seasons before potting. I will send it potted as shown. I would do any radical pruning of the top and roots next spring. Hopefully it goes to a similar climate and all you have to do is put the tree away for the winter. If going to a warmer climate, it may take a while for it to break dormancy. This would be considered a Kifu Sho bonsai, which is a tree up to 16 inches. The American elm is a deciduous species that is hardy from zones 3-9 and must be grown outdoors. Native to the eastern United States. The leaves are much larger than a Chinese elm but are said to reduce well. This species was famous for being used as a street tree that had the classic vase-shape, until it was wiped out in many areas due to Dutch elm disease. This will not happen when grown as a bonsai. I couldn't find out much bonsai information about American elm but it is definitely used for that purpose and you can see many examples on the web. They grow very fast and bud-back really well. Shipping is via priority mail at the 2 pound rate. Being dormant, it can also go ground advantage. Thanks for looking!
