Description: Signed CDV of Major Theodore Winthrop, believed to be the first Union Officer of rank killed in battle. In 1861, Winthrop was promoted from Captain to Major and appointed aide de camp for General Benjamin Butler. He served with the 7th New York Infantry during the battle of Big Berthel, where he was killed in action on 10 June 1861. Historical accounts of this battle convey that at one point Major Winthrop rallied his troops by exclaiming “One more charge boys, and the day is ours.'' Soon thereafter, he was killed by a musket ball to the heart, shot by black Confederate soldier Sam Ashe, 1st North Carolina Infantry. CDV is signed in ink by Winthrop beneath his likeness. Bottom margin of image shows foxing from previous adhesive. Overall very good condition. SHIPPING For Domestic and International shipping rates please contact us. Insurance is included.
