Description: This is a scarce, wonderful, antique book "Christ Was Born On Christmas Day: A Carol". It is a first edition, published in 1864 by James A. Gregory. Illustrated by James A Hows, lyrics written by Reverend John Mason Neale, music composed by Reverend Thomas Helmore. This book does not contain a story or narrative. It contains 12 interleaved, black and white, full plate illustrations, each with a quote, followed by a 2 page musical composition. There is a color plate before the title page. Book is leather bound with all gilt edges and gilt title on front and rear boards. Binding is tight, hinges are unbroken and spine is intact. That being said, there are some issues that aren't bad for a book that is 159 years old.Front board has a 2.25" area of leather deterioration near the bottom, corners and spine tail are rubbed, spine head has slight deterioration, gilt fading on spine. Back board looks great! Prior owner's name written in ink on front end paper, "Christmas 1903" written on flyleaf in pencil. One blank in between plates is loose to almost half way up the page. There is a damp stain within the textblock in the same pattern throughout the book along the spine side and partially along the top and bottom of the pages. No obstruction of illustrations on the bottom and it overlaps just a bit at the inner corner on top. Small tear on top of rear paste-down, looks to have been repaired. Please see pictures.
