Description: In the Southern Transcontinental Service Case, Delta Air Lines was granted an extension of Air Mail Route 24 to Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco via Las Vegas, Nevada. On June 11, 1961 service was inaugurated to Los Angeles by nonstop flights from Fort Worth and service to San Diego was inaugurated by nonstop flights from Dallas. Service to Las Vegas and San Francisco was deferred. Official cachets were used at Dallas and Fort Worth as well as at the new points added to this route. Cachets carry the designation “AM-8” although service was via Air Mail Route 24. This cover was carried on the inaugural Air Mail Route 24 flight from the Dallas, Texas Airport Mail Facility to San Diego, California (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Contract Air Mail Flights (CAM) section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as 33W113f.
