Alexander the Great camped there and dedicated an altar to Zeus in the 4th century BC. His lands passed to his generals, one of them being Seleucus I Nicator, who founded the cities of Antioch ad Orontem and the Port of Seleucia Piera as well as the Seleucid Dynasty. There were more than 16 ancient cities by the name of Antioch, adding to the confusion. This one became the capital of Syria. The city suffered extensive damage in 148 BC from an earthquake. Tigranes of Armenia occupied the city in 83 BC and it was passed to the Roman Republic in 64 BC. Julius Caesar freed it in 47 BC and the early Roman Emperors favored it and tried to make it an Eastern Rome. Several more violent earthquakes damaged the city in 37 and 115 AD. It was a chief center of early Christianity and the converts of Paul and Barnabas within the city were the first to be called Christians. The 4th century Emperor Julian had high hopes for making Antioch a rival of the capital of Constantinople, but his brand of paganism was not well received. In 526, the terrible 7.0 Antioch earthquake destroyed the city, but Justinian did his best to rebuild the city, renaming it Theopoulis or ‘City of God’. In 538 Khusraw sacked the city and then in 637 it was conquered by the Arabs. It was recovered by the Byzantines under Nicephorus II in 969 but was re-conquered by the Seljuk Turks in 1084. Crusaders staged the Siege of Antioch in 1098 and the city became a main battleground for the Crusades until the Mongols captured most of Syria in 1260. Bohemund retained Antioch and the County of Tripoli for a while, but Antioch could not survive. Important events in the year 598: Avars capture Thrace, but lose a large portion of their army to the plague; Maurice, Byzantine Emperor, makes peace with Agiluif, King of the Lombards by giving him Northern Italy; Many Ango-Saxons in the British Isles are converted to Christianity by missionaries; Births: Tai Zong, Tang Emperor; Deaths: King Wideok of Baekje
