Description: After more than 60 years of collecting coins, it is time to move my collection along to new homes. Here is a good example of an AE-3 bronze coin that was minted and issued from Pautalia (in then Trace) under the emperor Geta. He was the younger son of Septimius Severus and Julia Domna, and ruled as Caesar from 198-209AD and as Augustus from 209-212AD when this coin was minted. This is a “provincial” issue struck in Pautalia so as Greek was the long-used language in the eastern part of the empire, rather than Latin, the legends on coins were issued in Greek. This coin measures 17.5mm in diameter and shows wear from general circulation. The coins of Geta are listed as "scarce" because when he was assassinated by Caracalla in 212 AD, he was declared a “damanatio memoriae” so that his statues, coins, and memory was to be destroyed and not to be seen or heard. He was only 22 years old at the time and his rise and his rise and fall make for interesting reading. With fair to good detail on the obverse, the legend is not crisp but reads in Greek Π CEΠTI ΓETAC K, and portrays a bare headed draped and cuirassed bust right of Geta. Again with fair to good detail, the reverse has the less than fully legible legend in Greek, ΠAYTAΛIΩTΩN, with a nice design of Harpokrates standing left, holding a cornucopiae, with right hand to his mouth. This coin shows in reference books under Varbanov 5467 and Ruzicka 826 and shows as a nice even dark bronze patina when held in natural sunlight. I often receive questions as to which websites I use and recommend for research and while there are several good ones out there, I particularly like Wildwinds.com and numismatics.org and also forumancientcoins.com. I have often been asked what could these type coins buy in Roman days? At the time of this issue, one of these would buy enough bread for two days for a family or two liters of common wine so these type coins were used frequently for daily needs. As I bought most of my coins literally decades ago, I can offer them at the best available price you will find for the existing condition so my collection does not wind up in my “estate” sale! As everything needs to find a good home, I also provide FREE SHIPPING to within the US. **AS I AM FINALLY DISTRIBUTING MY COINS FROM OVER 60 YEARS OF COLLECTING YOU WILL FIND AFFORDABLE COINS OF INTEREST AT MY SITE FOR THOSE JUST GETTING INTO ANCIENT COINS AS WELL AS FOR THE ADVANCED COLLECTORS – ALL PROVIDED WITH CONTEXT IN HISTORY.
