Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Up for Auction is this Grand Rapids, Michigan, Charter #2890, $5.00 1882 Brown Back. Fr. #466, with treasury signatures of Blanche K. Bruce as Register of the Treasury and James Gilfillan as Treasurer of The United States. This note exhibits brown pen vanity bank signatures of Harvey J. Hollister as Cashier of the bank, and James M. Barnett as Bank President. The note has an incredible printing layout, as you can only find on $5.00 Brown Backs from that 1880’s time period. The bank was chartered on February 24, 1883 and issued Series 1883 Second Charter Brown Back Notes from 1883 up thru Series 1902 Plain Backs, when the bank liquidated on April 22, 1929. This was most certainly one of the earliest of the many Brown Back designs implemented. This bank never issued any small size Nationals. This is the earliest note that has been reported on the bank! The Kelly Census shows 116 large size notes reported on this bank. Of those 116 reported notes, only 5 of them are 2nd Charter Brown Backs! Of the 5 reported Brown Backs, 4 are $5.00’s and there is 1 reported $10.00. I will further add; that it is my opinion, that one of the 5 reported Brown Backs is a poor quality counterfeit. This note is a genuine note! This note is already listed the census. This note is well soiled and limp, from many years of circulation. The right side margin has one small nick toward the top. I do see one 3/16” repaired tear in the note in the bottom margin that just touches the “C” in Cashier. There are 5 tiny splits in the margins, all 1/8” or smaller, three of which are in the top margin, and two are in the bottom margin. I grade this note as a Good-Very Good, but please look at the scans and judge for yourself before bidding. This piece would make an excellent addition to any Michigan State or Kent County, Michigan area collector. This would also make an interesting note for people collecting interesting title layouts on $5.00 Brown Backs. I will include free standard shipping within the United States.
