Description: Eclogues: Eight Stories Author: DAVENPORT, Guy Title: Eclogues: Eight Stories Publication: San Francisco: North Point Press, 1981 Edition: First Edition Description: Hardcover. Octavo, 238pp. About very good in the publsiher's navy boards with grey cloth spine. Foxing and soiling to boards, and to part of the endpapers, as well as the edges. Else clean and sound internally. In a very good dust jacket, foxed on the verso and toned on the spine, but free of tears and creases. A meaningful association copy, belonging to Davenport's bibliographer Joan Crane, and SIGNED and INSCRIBED by three figures, including Davenport, to her on the front free endpaper. The first inscription, signed "Wm" is certainly publisher William Turnbull, who writes: "8/11/81 The Village [Pot?] Woodside, CA. For Joan Crane, an inscription not from the author but from the publisher. Being number 2 we try harder. With Love, Wm." Below that is an inscription from Davenport, who writes: "For Joan Crane, an inscription from the author, and from our friend for whom the book was written, Guy Davenport Thanksgiving 1983." As indicated by Davenport's inscription, the final note is from the book's dedicatee, Davenport's longtime partner Bonnie Jean Cox, who has simply signed her name, also dating it Thanksgiving 1983 (presumably Crane, Davenport, and Cox were at the same Thansgiving table). Crane's bibliography of Davenport was published over a decade later, in 1995. Her accomplishments in the wider literary world were many, and she was a respected figure in the history of modern bibliography. Aside from her Davenport bibliography, she also wrote definitive works on Robert Frost, Willa Cather, William Faulkner, and Carl Sandburg, among others. A most pleasing association. Very good- / very good.
