Description: Welcome to my auction. Utagawa Hiroshige 1797-1858 Japanese Wood-block artist The fifty-three stages of the Tokaido Highway (Tokaido Gojusantsugi) are rest stops on the Tokaido, the coastal road from Nihonbashi in Edo to Sanjo Ohashi in Kyoto. [Initially, the Tokaido highway had 53 stops, and travelers crossed the road by presenting their passport at each stop. The inland Nakasendo also started at Nihonbashi and joined the Tokaido at Kusatsu-juku. The salt road intersected the Tokaido at Okazaki-juku. Fifty-three Stages of the Tokaido" (Houei-do edition) is a series of Ukiyoe created by Hiroshige Utagawa after his first trip along the Tokaido Highway in 1832. Hiroshige Utagawa created this series after his first trip along the Tokaido Highway in 1832. It is also the most important of the "five highways" that were created or developed during the Edo period in order to further strengthen the central government's control over the nation. The "Fifty-three Stages of the Tokaido" are so popular that Hiroshige produced as many as 30 different woodblock prints, all different in size (edition), design, and number of sheets (some series have several sheets). The H?ei-do edition of Tokaido is Hiroshige's masterpiece and the best-selling Ukiyo-e in Japan. Produced just after Hokusai's 36 Views of Mount Fuji, this work established a new theme in Ukiyo-e: landscape painting with a focus on scenic beauty. Hiroshige's landscape paintings took full advantage of the new possibilities offered by Western perspective. Hiroshige's series of works were a great success not only in Japan but also later in the West. Item specificsType: Woodblock Prints Vintage postcard (9cm×14cm?
