Series -- American Century Series, S-13 His Fifty Years of Exile-Israel Potter is Herman Melville as the teller of good yarns. Essentially it is one of the novelist's most readable books, yet it contains some of Melville's most ironic comments on what he describes as "the primeval savageness which ever slumbers in human kind." In it, as Professor Lewis Leary points out in his distinguished introduction, he asks the question direct: "Is civilization a thing distinct, or is it an advanced stage of barbarism?" To this question Melville suggests an answer, but as he does it, the narrative fever flags. Based on the true exploits of a colonial American who was a soldier in the Revolution, Melville's story pictures four Americans who might be considered representative men of the times: Benjamin Franklin, John Paul Jones, Ethan Allen, and Israel Potter, the common soldier. For many, the finest part of the narrative is the brilliant picture of the great battle between the "Bon Homme Richard" and the British frigate, the "Serapis." The details of this bloody struggle were never before better set forth, for Melville is writing of the sea, and therefore with incomparable authority. His Fifty Years of Exile is an important book (...), for it furnishes specific illustrations of Melville's true attitude toward his own country-the country which had little time to read his books during his lifetime. #bibliophile #instabooks #Bookworm #bookcollecting #SagamorePress #BartelbyTheScrivener #Scarce #MobyDick #instaread #HermanMelville #Bookstagram #booksale #BartelbyTheScrivener #CoverArt #SagamorePress #Bookworm #Novel #Rare #AmericanCenturySeries #collectiblebooks #Scarce #BooksBooksBook #Vintage #Books #CuttleboneBooks #Antiquarian #Fiction #readersofinstagram #booksforsale #IsraelPotter
