Description: Human Factors in Land Use Planning and Urban Design by Paul M. Salmon, Guy H. Walker, Nicholas J. Stevens, Neville A. FORMAT Hardcover LANGUAGE English CONDITION Brand New Publisher Description This book furthers the role of human factors methods in land use planning and urban design that was recognised by Stevens and Salmon in 2014. At a simplistic level the issues found in both discipline areas are one and the same: the design of the environment brings about emergent behaviours that in some cases are not optimal. Such inquiries are often described as humans and systems not behaving as they were expected to; problems which impact overall system performance, and often issues that have been resistant to a range of an ongoing technical interventions. The same is true for many of the challenges in land use planning and design, including crime prevention and safe cities, the prioritisation of walkable and cycleable neighbourhoods, or the design and implementation of enduring, accessible and attractive public open space. By collaborating with Stanton and Walker to advance this line of study, this resulting book uniquely provides a description of, and detailed guidance on, a range of human factors methods that can be usefully employed in the land use planning and design context. It presents the reader with a series of novel case study applications that showcase the utility of human factors in land use planning and design, as well as detailing a research and practice agenda for future applications. In presenting novel land use planning and urban design case study applications of 25 human factors methods, Human Factors in Land Use Planning and Urban Design covers a range of key themes, including development assessment; crime prevention; transport planning; dispute resolution; flood infrastructure development; walkability; community consultation and sensory urban design. The book will be of interest to a broad relevant readership including students, post-graduate researchers, academic researchers, human factors practitioners, urban planners, architects, engineers, social planners, property developers, systems engineers, strategic planners, local government and political decision makers. Author Biography Dr Nicholas Stevens is a landscape architect and urban planner with a background in regional planning and urban design. In these capacities he has consulted widely in Australia and internationally and lectures within these domains in the Urban Planning Program at the University of the Sunshine Coast. He has significant experience in collaborative research projects with Australian local, state and federal governments, private enterprise, and national and international research institutions. Nicholas current research areas include the assessment and design of urban transport corridors, the identification of compatible airport and regional land use and economic development, and serious game development for urban planning education. His current cross disciplinary research involves applying and testing human factors methods to a range of urban planning and urban design challenges. Paul Salmon is a Professor in Human Factors and leader of the Centre for Human Factors and Sociotechnical Systems at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Paul holds an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship and has over 15 years experience in applied Human Factors research in a number of domains, including the military, aviation, and road and rail transport. Paul has co-authored 10 books, over 110 peer review journal articles, and numerous conference articles and book chapters. He is a member of the UK, European and Australian Human Factors societies and serves on the editorial board of Theoretical Issues in Ergonomics Science. Paul has received various accolades for his research to date, including the 2007 Royal Aeronautical Society Hodgson Prize for best research and best paper and the 2008 Ergonomics Societys Presidents Medal. Paul was also recently named as one of three finalists in the 2011 Scopus Young Australian Researcher of the Year Award and won the 2014 VC and Presidents medal for research excellence.
