Description: Extremely rare 1968 NAACP handbill. An example of this handbill was offered at Swann’s Auction in NY in 2022 and sold for an incredible $2000! A screenshot (actually two screenshots so all information is captured for reference) appears in photos above. The Swann’s description has great information and reads as follows (this is a cut-and-paste): “Description: Typeset: (CIVIL RIGHTS.) Register to Vote Today . . . I Can't Vote Because I am a Dog! What's Your Excuse? Handbill, 5½ x 4 inches; minimal war. No place, circa 1968 Footnote: A clever NAACP voter registration appeal. If logic does not work, a cute dog is a good fallback. The Oakland Post photo archive at the African American Museum & Library in Oakland holds a copy of the original photograph of the boy and dog, dated 1964. A placard with this image was displayed at a voter rights march in Amarillo, TX, as described by the Amarillo Globe-Times of 15 January 1968.” I have priced this handbill at a modest percentage of its Swann’s auction result simply because I think the $2000 this piece sold for was extremely high.
