Talk about free-form, yet still tightly-structured Musicianship & Jamming ... Whoa !!?! This is some Immaculate & Incredible ! Live-Music here my fellow Fans !! Have you not heard of this Garcia " Gem " ? ... released by Grateful Dead Records ( GDCD ! ) way-back in 1998 ??! Wow ... I mean you just have to hand it to Howard Wales ( Keyboardist ) on this one - as he apparently asked Garcia, along with John Kahn & Bill Vitt ( Drums ) to come & jam with him on Monday nights at the famous San Francisco venue the Matrix. And what became of these live performance sessions is something unique, really like no other. I guess you could probably call this a hybrid free-form ( maybe even free-funk ? ) psychedelic jazz-based & folk / blues rooted delivery. These Guys are Amazing ! not only in how tight they are as a " quad-unit ", but also because they can really do whatever they want with tempos & time changes. They can jam the roof-off, then turn around and also deliver the subtle, soft & clean. Garcia is all over this stuff, as is Howard Wales - indeed. What is very interesting to me personally, is that the only change between this unit and the '72 on " Garcia & Saunders " ( eventually Legion of Mary ) is an exchange of Howard Wales & Merl Saunders. But we're talking about two absolutely completely different bands in both material, style & delivery ! I think this offers a real due credit to John, as well as Bill Vitt for their vision & flexibility on both the rhythm & timekeeping. This project started live, and ended up in the studio - thus producing the " Hooteroll ? " album released in 1972. So in other words it started in the true Jerry Garcia & Grateful Dead way - live & in your face getting you to almost shake out of your shoes. Hey, it's a true testing ground - and then if the people like it, you can give'em an album ( even if it does not profit, or might even lose money ). In my humble opinion, this is one of the most underrated & amazing Grateful Dead Production ( Grateful Dead Records ! ) CD ( GDCD ! ) releases - the performances take place on & around 1970, and a live digital release comes out 18 years later in 1998. For what it's worth, I hope those the likes of Miles Davis, Coltrane and even the men from Pink Floyd have heard the fruit of this project's labor, because I really think they all might have really liked it, and might have even felt - or been inspired. At least to my ears, this material & especially - the Live-delivery ! of it, is just " That-Good " !! Wow !!! ... Enjoy !!!!!
