Description: Jesus Praying In Garden At Gethsemane - Painting - Blessed by Pope John Paul II This religious relic (not sure if that's the proper word) is a painting that has been in the family for well over 60 years (it was there before I was born and I'm turning 60), depicting Jesus Praying in the Garden At Gethsemane. The painting is signed by an artist named Giovanni. The painting has a very unusual history. My grandmother considered it a holy item, all the more so when she had it blessed by Pope John Paul II. Pope John Paul II visited Chicago in Oct. 1979 and my grandmother always loved recounting the story of how she carried it through the streets near Five Holy Martyrs church and managed to get the Pope to personally bless it. It was my uncle who was actually recruited to carry it, because it's a good 14 lb. framed painting and quite large. But I do remember them taking it there and getting it blessed. I wish I still had the picture my uncle took of my grandmother holding it up while the Pope blessed it, but that was lost over the years with so many other old family pictures. My grandmother always proclaimed this painting to be a holy item, all the more so after it was blessed by the Pope. She attributed miraculous powers to it. One time she was scheduled to get her gall bladder removed due to gall bladder stones. She was in a lot of pain and was praying to Jesus while looking at the painting when suddenly her pain stopped. The doctors told her a few days later that she didn't need surgery after all. The stones apparently passed. Another time, they found a small mass in her lung on an x-ray and once again she prayed to Jesus while looking at the painting. A subsequent x-ray revealed no mass anywhere in her lungs. She also attributed holy power to colds disappearing overnight, aches and pains going away, etc. She adamantly insisted that the painting did have miraculous powers, especially after Pope John Paul II blessed it. I myself am an atheist, but I have to admit I cannot account for those seemingly miraculous healings. And I also have to admit, strange effects seem to happen when looking at it. It's a beautiful painting and a haunting looking scene. Several times I have been looking at it in my apartment with all the windows closed and suddenly smelled fresh flowers, grass, and trees as if I were in a garden myself. Other times I can swear I've heard what sounds like prayers being murmured coming from the painting, or the lights in the city in the painting flickering, or movements of the shadows. I never noticed such effects when I was a child and would look at it, but have noticed these things happening sometime after she had it blessed by the Pope. Who knows? What I do know is that this is a hauntingly beautiful, vintage painting that is in amazingly good condition even though it is over 60 years old, and that unusual, hard to explain effects often happen while looking at it. It really belongs in the hands of a Christian or Catholic - someone who can really appreciate this rare item. I'm no expert but I'd say it's pretty rare to have an item actually handled by and blessed by a Pope. That makes this a rare, one of a kind item and I hope it finds a good home. I hate to sell this because it's a family heirloom, but I've been laid off of both of my jobs so I'm hoping someone finds this worth buying. I'm open to offers, just please make a fair offer.
