Limoges, FRANCE with GRAPES, Leaves & Vines, circa 1890-1932 The Pouyat family was one of the oldest French names associated with the porcelain in the Limoges region dating all the way back to the 1700’s. Jean Pouyat began a company in 1842 at Limoges and the business was carried on by his sons after his death in 1849. About 1883, the company became known as La Ceramique. The now famous JPL backstamps were used beginning in 1851 and the specific one that is on this tankard is called mark #5 by Mary Frank Gaston in Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition which was used starting in 1890 and continued until 1932. William Guerin Companies merged with JPL in 1912; this was further acquired by Bawo & Dotter (Elite Works) in about 1920. The JPL mark was still used at the former Pouyat factory until the company closed in 1932. The condition of this tankard is superb. We can find no defects or damage. In the bottom of the tankard there is a very small glazed over piece of slip debris. This can be seen in photo #11. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. The gold shows virtually no wear. It really appears to be in excellent condition and is clean. This tankard is 11 3/4" high and has a 3 3/4" diameter at the top. It is 6 1/8" in diameter at the bottom; the widest width including the handle is 7 7/8". The artist was particularly talented and painted this pitcher to be equally beautiful from all sides. One side features a cluster of purple grapes and another large cluster beside it of lighter colored grapes. These two clusters are so large that they cover most of the height of the tankard. The other side repeats the color scheme with two smaller clusters connected by leaf & vine. The handle is a twisted grape vine which changes in color from dark brown to a reddish sienna. The color of the rings on the bottom of the tankard really accent the color of the grape painting by changing from dark brown to green.
