LEE DE FOREST - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 04/14/1909 - HFSID 47123 LEE DE FOREST Letter expressing his lack of interest for the Luzac Memorial Typed Letter Signed: "Lee de Forest", 1p, 8¼x11. De Forest Radio Telephone Co., New York, 1909 April 14. To Wm. Elliot Griffis, Ithaca, N.Y. De Forest is "not sufficiently interested" in contributing to the Luzac memorial, but when he undertakes "to erect a memorial to Jesse de Forest at some suitable point in upper Manhattan, I shall be very happy to contribute...." In 1623, Jesse de Forest, a Huguenot exile, brought the first settlers from Holland to New Amsterdam which became New York in 1664. Professor Jean Luzac, editor of an influential paper, "The Gazette de Leyde", published in Leyden, Holland, and circulated throughout Europe, was exceedingly helpful in arousing sympathy for the Americans during the American Revolution. The Story of New Netherland by William Elliot Griffis was published in 1909. Lee de Forest patented more than 300 inventions in wireless telegraphy, radio telephony, sound-on-film talking pictures, high-speed facsimile transmission, television, radiotherapy and related areas. One of his most important inventions was the vacuum tube that was used in radios and televisions. Beginning in 1951, Senator John Bricker of Ohio, who had been the Republican Vice Presidential candidate in 1944, began introducing a series of proposed constitutional amendments limiting the President's authority to negotiate executive agreements with foreign powers and declaring that no international treaty could take precedence over the US Constitution in US courts. Opposed by President Eisenhower, the Bricker amendment failed in the US Senate by a single vote in 1954. Nicked, shaded edges and blank margins. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso shows through at center of page, touching last paragraph of letter. Folds, vertical fold touches second "e" in Lee. Light type transfer. Lightly creased.Otherwise, fine condition. See more material from these signers: LEE DE FOREST See more listings in our SCIENCE & MEDICINE (1,169) category.
