Description: U.S. Model 1860 Staff and Field Officer presentation grade sword. Marker marked by Whitlock New York on the blade. Nice Double engraved blade with a gilt background (however, blade is not named to an individual). Nice presentation grade silver handle and presentation grade scabbard with some wear. Blade is generally okay, however, it has small edge nicks and tip area is bent up to one side. The blade is approx 29 inches in length. Nice double clam shell guards with patriotic scenes. Overall a good example of an M-1860 Presentation Grade Staff and Field officer sword, however, not named or attributed to an individual. Typically, the 1860 Staff and Field Officer’s sword was more a badge of rank than a weapon. In 1872 the M-1860 sword was expanded for use by all Army officers except medical officers, paymasters, and mounted officers. The Model 1860 Staff and Field officer sword was eventually replaced by the Model 1902 Officers Saber.
