Description: Malcolm's Village by Gunilla Lundgren Rare Children's Book Dealing with Death RARE Grade 4-6 Seven-year-old Malcolm, a Swedish boy, lives with his parents in a village on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. When "Grandma," a village elder, dies, Malcolm mourns with the rest of the compound and is comforted by local legend and burial rites. Illustrations are color photos and pen-and-ink drawings of Malcolm, villagers and landscape. While it is clear that "Grandma" and village life left a strong and positive impression on the Swedes who wrote this book, it will not be clear to uninitiated readers, who will not be as moved. The text reads like a family album/memoir. There is quite a lot of information on the Kilimanjaro villagers' folklore and death and dying rituals that will interest social studies students, but this book is more likely to be classified under books on death and dying than geography.
