Reflecting personally on the saint: Saint Clare of Assisi was an influential figure in the Catholic Church, known for founding the Order of Poor Ladies, later renamed the Poor Clares. Born as Chiara Offreduccio in 1194 in Assisi, Italy, she came from a wealthy family but chose a life of poverty and piety. Inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi's teachings, Clare left her affluent background at the age of 18 during Palm Sunday services in 1211. She fled to the Porziuncola Chapel, where Francis cut her hair and gave her a rough tunic to wear as a symbol of her renunciation of worldly goods. Clare's determination led her family, who initially opposed her decision, to eventually accept her choice. Under Clare's leadership, the Poor Clares embraced a life of extreme poverty and austerity. They went barefoot, never ate meat, and observed almost complete silence. Unlike other religious communities of the time, they were entirely dependent on alms, embodying Clare’s philosophy that poverty was a privilege, not a penance. Saint Clare was known for her strong will and the profound spiritual influence she had on her community. She was also known for her miracles, such as once turning away an attacking army by holding up the Blessed Sacrament in a monstrance at the convent's window, which allegedly caused the invaders to flee. Clare’s devotion influenced many, and her order quickly spread across Europe. She was canonized in 1255, just two years after her death on August 11, 1253. Saint Clare is the patron saint of eye disease, goldsmiths, laundry, television, and telephones. Her feast day is celebrated on August 11th.
