Description: Northwood Amethyst Carnival Glass Peacock at the Fountain Berry Sauce Bowl ~ 1908 {Photo taken indoors with no flash. More photos below} Classic Northwood Glass "Peacock at the Fountain" Amethyst Carnival Glass Berry Sauce Bowl Approximate Dimensions: 5" (Diameter) x 2" (High) x 2.5" (Base Diameter) Made and Signed by the Harry C. Northwood Glass Company Wheeling, West Virginia circa 1908 {The "underlined N in a circle" Northwood trademark on the interior center of bowl.} This is an antique (circa 1908), amethyst carnival glass berry or sauce bowl in the sought-after PEACOCK AT THE FOUNTAIN exterior pattern made by the pre-eminent Northwood Glass Company. Very, Very Brief Background on Northwood & Dugan. Thomas Dugan and his cousin, Harry C. Northwood, started out in the 1880s as employees at the Hobbs-Brockunier Glass firm in Wheeling, West Virginia. Eventually, Harry would form the Northwood Glass Company of Wheeling, West Virginia and Thomas would form the Dugan Glass Company of Indiana, Pennsylvania. Both companies were kingpins of the carnival and opalescent glass market in the early 1900's. Northwood and Dugan shut down carnival glass production altogether in the early to mid 1920s. Condition. This bowl is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, or flea bites, or restorations. There are some straw marks ("tool marks") and internal air bubbles from manufacturing commonly associated with the hand making of old EAPG, carnival, and opalescent glass. The iridescence is splendid, bright and evenly applied. No two items of old carnival glass are identical, each is unique. ... A great find! Very pretty! This item is a perfect example of Harry C. Northwood carnival glass and would make a pleasant addition to any collection of old EAPG, carnival and opalescent glass, e.g., Fenton, Dugan, Westmoreland, Jefferson, Brockwitz, Sowerby, Riihimaki, Millersburg, Indiana, Imperial, and others.
