Description: You are bidding on a 105.2 gram aerodynamic specimen of Northwest Africa 869 - the famous meteorite with the big strewnfield in Algeria found by European and nomad Berber meteorite hunters first in about 2000, that has given classifying scientists headaches ever since then. I say aerodynamic as it looks like a convincing oriented stone shape to me but the weathering removes the finest details in the fusion crust that would allow me to state that with 100% certainty. Take a look and you’ll likely agree with me. If you call it oriented I would absolutely support that as all looks good but I’m strict and can’t make out flow lines easily for the purposes of selling, so look at it shape and smooth aerodynamic curve and please decide for yourself. NWA 869 was discovered as a reasonably fresh yet weathered exterior find in the Sahara about 20 years ago. It was a large fall with a quite varied lithology L3-6 and being a breccia made it even more complicated! Also many other meteorites from the area got thrown into “NWA 869” by middlemen and resellers to really muck up the situation. Finally it was partly sorted out but not after quite a bit of heated banter on how these finds from dense deserts should be classified and named and how bad people who recovered them were for not investing in expeditions for the public good and then turning the meteorites over to science, and sharing selflessly their precise find coordinates is a timely fashion. There are many points of view but what I am certain of is that this is a fabulous meteorite and we are indebted to all the hunters and scientists who actually recovered and studied it, and made it available at such awesome prices.
