His mother was called Anne Louise Pinson. In 1803 he married Claudine Elisabeth Sophie Darsin, who died soon after. The marriage remained childless. His second marriage was with Anne Marie Patin (-1810) on October 8, 1805, with whom he had a son, Louis Victor Bevalet (1808-1887), who, like his father, painted natural history objects. After the death of his second wife, her property became his. At that time he lived at 3, rue Mâcon and worked as a stage painter. [1] A year later, on September 15, 1811, he married Marie Marguerite Übler (1788-1818). [2] [3] His fourth marriage was with Marie Julie Chignon (1789-1847). With her he had a son, Charles Antoine Bevalet (1826–1878), who was a geologist and played a key role in illustrating the works of Louis Figuier (1819–1894) in La vie et le mœurs des animeaux and The Ocean World . [A 2] Auguste Adolphe Baudon (1821–1905) named Pupa bevaletii in 1853 in honor of his friend Charles. [4] When the Odéon burned on 18 March 1799, it was a troop of grenadiers led by the young Bevalet who saved numerous works of art, including a Voltaire statue by Jean-Antoine Houdon . At the time, he lived at 3 rue Voltaire . [5] Bevalet died at his residence at 12 rue Notre-Dame des Champs in Paris. Exc. M. Le Vicomte du Bouchage, Secrétaire d'état au département de la Marine, exécuté sur les corvettes de SM l'Uranie et la Physicienne, pendant les années 1817, 1818, 1819 et 1820 under the leadership of Louis de Freycinet, he delivered the Plates 12, 44, 45, 48, 79 & 80, together with Antoine Chazal (1793–1854) plate 62 and after Adrien Aimé Taunay (1803–1828) plates 54, 55 & 65. Other plates came from Chazal (1 , 2 & 58), by Taunay and Chazal (56, 57 & 64), by Lucien Alphonse Prévost (3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 14, 20, 21, 22, 31, 32, 41, 42, 43, 69, 70, 71, 75, 84 & 85), from Prévost to Taunay (96) , by Nicolas Geneviève Huet (5, 8 & 24), Paul Louis Oudart (13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 23, 25, 26, 27, 30, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38 , 39, 40, 49, 51, 52, 53, 59, 77 & 78), from Oudart to Taunay (50, 61 & 81), from Jean-Gabriel Prêtre (28, 29 & 76), by Émile Blanchard (60, 67, 68, 72, 82 & 83), by Taunay (86 & 87), Jacques-Amand Eudes-Deslongchamps (88, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94 & 95), by Jacques Arago and Charles Gaudichaud-Beaupré (73 & 74), as well as by Alphonse Pellion (1796–1868) and Taunay (66). The botanical part was illustrated by Jean Louis Marie Poiret (1755 –1834). For Voyage autour du monde: executed by order of the king, on the corvette of His Majesty, la Coquille, during the years 1822, 1823, 1824, and 1825 under the direction of Louis-Isidore Duperrey, for the ornithological and mammological contribution of René Primevère Lesson and Prosper Garnot, plates 9, 31 & 39. In the atlas on crustaceans , insects and zoophytes , plates 9 & 10 of the zoophytes were by Bevalet and for the atlas on herpetology , ichthyology and conchology, all seven reptile plates, of the 38 fish plates all except plates 9, 10 (both Prêtre and Lesson) and 30 Lesson as well as plates 7 & 11 of the mussels. It is often stated in the literature that Bevalet took part in both voyages, [6] [7] but it was Louis-François Lejeune (1775–1848) (also known as Jules Louis Lejeune) who officially represented Louis-Isidore Duperrey's voyage as an artist and whose sketches other artists later made plates from. [8] For Louis de Freycinet's voyage, it was Jacques Arago who was hired as an artist. [9] In Voyage autour du Monde executed during the years 1836 and 1837 on the Corvette La Bonite under the leadership of Auguste-Nicolas Vaillant, plate 45 with various shells is found, illustrated by Bevalet. Other works with panels by BevaletIn Lesson's work Illustrations de zoologie, ou Recueil de figures d'animaux peintes d'après nature he drew plates 14 Flabellum pavoninum , 26 Trigonia from various perspectives, 33 Chrysiridia rhipheus , 37 & 38 both Draco lineatus . For Félix Édouard Guérin-Méneville's Iconographie du règne animal de G. Cuvier he drew the bird plates 1, 8 & 9, the reptile plates 2, 3, 4, 5 & 7 and the fish plates 1 & 4. In addition to Bevalet, the artists Pancrace Bessa (1772–1835), Prêtre, his son Louis Victor Bevalet, Elisa Zoé Dumont de Sainte Croix (1806–1849), the daughter of Charles Dumont de Sainte Croix, Antoine Charles Vauthier (1790–1879) (based on a model by William Swainson ) and Lesson's second wife Clémence Marie Lesson (1800–1834) provided additional plates for Lesson's hummingbird work Histoire naturelle des oiseaux-mouches. The plates were engraved by Jean Louis Denis Coutant (1776–1863) and printed by Narcisse Claude Julien Rémond (1799–1863). [10] [A 4] In Histoire naturelle des colibris , another hummingbird work by Lesson, which appeared from 1830 to 1832 in 13 volumes with 66 plates, Bevalet provided the plates of the copperhead hummingbird ( Aphantochroa cirrochloris ) (Plates 23 & 6 (Part I)), the Anna's hummingbird ( Calypte anna ) (Plate 7), the blue-headed amaryllis ( Saucerottia cyanocephala (Plate 18), the purple-fronted sapphire hummingbird ( Basilinna leucotis ) (Plate 29), the broad-winged hummingbird ( Eupetomena macroura ) (Plate 39). The lion's share of the plates were by Prêtre, the engraving by Coutant and AP Teillard and the printing by Rémond. [11] [A 5] In Les trochilidées ou, les colibris et les oiseaux-mouches he illustrated the Blue-headed hummingbird ( Riccordia bicolor ) (plate 16), the Brown-throated shad ( Phaethornis longuemareus ) (plate 9), the Red-naped Topaz hummingbird ( Topaza pella ) (plate 20), the Glitter-throated Amacialia subspecies ( Chionomesa fimbriata tephrocephala ) (plate 329), the Green-faced hummingbird ( Augastes scutatus ) (plate 61) and the Broad-tailed hummingbird ( Selasphorus platycercus ) (plates 63 & 64). The remaining plates were all by Prêtre, the engraving was done by Marie-Nicolas Oudet (1810–1873) and the printing was done by Rémond. The work itself was published in 14 deliveries from 1832 to 1833.
