The first edition was published in 1859. In the fifth edition of the text, Darwin used the phrase "survival of the fittest" for the first time in any of his works. He would later use the word "evolution" for the first time in The Descent of Man (1871) and then included that term in the sixth edition of The Origin (1872). The binding is tight. There is foxing from the first endpaper until the verso of the title page, as well as on the rear flyleaves and endpapers. There is virtually no foxing in the text itself, with the exception of a few spots on the folding diagram. The hinges are discretely and archivally reinforced. The head of the spine and the tips have been restored (see the last pictures for closeups). No writing, underlining, or prior owner's name.
