Description: Handsome original 1884 color lithographed map of the colony of New Zealand, with an inset plan showing the geological features of both the North and South Islands, printed more than 140 years ago. The image area measures 28.7 x 20.3 cm [11¼" x 8"], and there is a list in the lower corner of the counties created in 1876, following the dissolution of the colony's provinces. Among the named places and features are Hokianga, Cook Strait, Dunedin, Pegasus Bay, Canterbury Bight, Te Uriweri Country, New Plymouth, Bay of Plenty, Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. An inset at the upper left, with a color-coded legend, shows New Zealand's geological features. The cartography is by John Bartholomew, and the map was published in the 9th edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica, Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1884. Condition: It is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with no rips, tears, or writing.
