Description: Welcome! Original vintage poster in slovak language: "VYSTAVA VYVOJ CLOVEKA" or "EXHIBITION HUMAN EVOLUTION", with text: "FRONTAL BONE OF ANCIENT MAN FROM AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIND IN SALA (1961) - SLOVAK NATIONAL MUSEUM INSTITUTE OF NATIONAL SCIENCES - VAJANSKEHO WATERFRONT 2 BRATISLAVA - OPENED DAILY FROM 9am TILL 5pm EXCEPT MONDAY - 1973" Designed by: anonymous artist, most likely in 1973 Total measurements: approx. 97,5x59cm Condition report: poster was stored folded, shows some tears and creasing especially on edges, in corners and in fold lines, also shows some yellowing and stains Historical context: Sala 1 or Sala Neanderthal is a discovery of a Neanderthal from city Sala in Slovakia (near river Vah). The bone was found in 1961 by Jozef Syrovy, a soldier of the basic service, in the gravel on the right bank of the Vah about 4.5 km south of the Sala bridge as dredged from the river gravel (the find does not show signs of being transported by water for a long time, so the original deposit was not far from the place of discovery). It is often erroneously stated that the skull was found by a fisherman, Mr. V. Cernansky. The find consists of the dark brown to black frontal bone of an adult woman who was 20-40 years old. As Thurzo 1998 writes about the find: Typical features are a partially arched forehead and an uninterrupted supraorbital ridge with a slight postorbital narrowing. An oval dimple above the edge of the right eye socket indicates a trauma or injury.Direct dating of the find is not available. Wood 2011 states that according to biostratigraphy it probably (together with the Sala 2 find) comes from the last interglacial (i.e. Riss-Wurm, so it would be a proto-Neanderthal), but Wolpoff 1999 lists it as a Wurm find and similarly Thurzo 1998 ranks it among classic Neanderthals (which for him is the period 80 – 40,000 BP). Otherwise, in (especially older) literature, he is also classified as a transitional Neanderthal or protosapient (Wiki).
