An Oyama planter is a two-piece plastic, self-watering flowerpot with a smooth rim to protect the leaf stems of your plant. The outer pot holds approximately one week’s water supply. The violet (or other plant) is potted directly into the inner pot using a soil less (peat moss based) medium. There is a tube built into the base of the inner pot. You fill the tube with perlite, a horticultural sand-like product. The tube filled with perlite contacts the water in the outer pot and slowly pulls it up into the soil for the plant in the inner pot. This 2 ½ “ sized planter is suitable for miniature or semi-miniature African violets. It is also an appropriate size for a very young standard sized violet that does not yet need a larger pot. The insert pot will hold 1/3 of a cup of potting mix. Oyama planters are most often used for growing African violets, but can also be used for other houseplants. They come in various sizes and most have a built in line low on the inner pot wall just above the slotted platform. This line is a guide for how much perlite to put into the base of the insert. The lower pot that holds the water has a water guideline built into it. When watering, don’t fill above the water guideline as doing so can over-water your plant. Over-watering is the main cause of failure with houseplants. The Oyama planter makes it very difficult to over-water because the water is pulled up to the plant slowly and steadily. You can mix your favorite plant food into the water and thereby feed and water your plant at the same time. Plants need air as well as water at the root level. The Oyama planter is one of the best at providing good air circulation to the root system without drying them out too much. The upper pot opening of the planter measures 2 ½ ” in diameter. The planting area is 1 ¾ “ deep. Overall the planter is 3 ¼ “ tall. The diameter of the base of the planter is 2“.
