Originally appeared in Hamerton's influential art journal "Portfolio -An Artistic Periodical" (vol 2, 1871). This sheet from "A Score of Etchings with text by Roger Riordan", Dodd, Mead & Co., New York; c 1894. Hamerton was perhaps the most influential person in the late 19th C etching revival. Besides editing the above art journal he wrote "Etching and Etchers" (1866), was a noted critic, artist and novelist. He promoted the idea of etching as an original art form.
