This is a history of a people and their church - Philippi Baptist Church - so named for the Philippian Church of the New Testament. Philippi, as a mere name, may mean little to the casual reader, but it was in that ancient city that this church, which was known for its generosity and compassion, was founded. From this place Chris- tianity was introduced into Europe and thence spread to our western world. There is no doubt that Philippi Baptist Church of Union County, South Carolina, was deserving of its name. The community in which it was established, like the ancient Philippi, was known for its generous and compassionate inhabitants. The best of people is exemplified in the life of Miss Ella Whitlock. This lady not only gave the church its name, but she also lived its commitment by unselfishly giving her attention and devotion to not only the organization of the church, but to the actual construction of the church building as well. This work introduces other dedicated Christians who make this a history about the continuing life of a church and its people.
